The four students of the Federal
University of Technology, Akure,
(FUTA), who came tops at the 8th
National Mathematics Competition for
University Students (2016 NAMCUS),
which took place in Abuja under the
aegis of the National Mathematical
Centre will on 25 and 29 July, represent
Nigeria at the International
Mathematics Competition (IMC) 2016.
The competition, which is being put
together by the University College,
London, holds in America University,
Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
The FUTA Team comprise, Michael
Omolaja, a 500 level student who
currently has the title of Best Student
Mathematician across Nigerian
Universities; Mary Akinade and Segun
Ofe, both 500 level students who won
silver medals and Desmond Dike, a 300
level student who picked a bronze
medal.
The International Competition would
consist of two sessions of five hours
each with problems from algebra, real
and complex analysis, geometry and
combinatorics.
The Nigerian team will face students
from about 80 countries across the
globe.
A 16-year-old pupil of the Government Secondary School, Tunga, Niger State, Faith Galadima, who was impregnated by the school’s vice principal, Mohammed Mohammed, has given birth to a baby boy. The teenager was delivered of the baby at Injita village, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State. The VP had allegedly slept with the pupil sometime in March this year, putting her in the family way. Mohammed was arraigned in court on April 4, 2017 and is standing trial on two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, and impregnating a female pupil. The accused was remanded in the prison custody for three months after he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding magistrate, Fatima Auna, had granted the VP bail in the sum of N1m, which she said was in line with sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution, and sections 341 and 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
