How to make students pass UMTE — Educationist

The major reason accounting for the failure of candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is the inability of many schools to make e- learning a priority, thus making it extremely difficult for candidates to manipulate computer in the exam hall. This revelation came from the Chief Learning Officer of Mandate Private Schools, Akesan, Igando, Lagos, Rev. Sunday Attah. This, according to him, arose from the failure of many schools to anticipate the introduction of computer- based exam in the country. His words: “The reason our students pass UTME excellently well every year is because we were able, far back as 2008, to predict the introduction of computer-based examination in Nigeria and we immediately made e-learning from primary school to SS3 a top priority. At a forum in South Africa in 2008 which I attended and was organized by the Nigeria based Accelerated Learning Gro...

Suddenly, with the speed of light, Seyi Law angrily flew out of his car and dazed the security guard, Peter Ethan, with three hot resounding slaps that got him probably seeing stars and staggering for balance. Lost for words as to why Seyi Law bullied him in such a rascally manner, the security guard burs...

London mayor was very rude about me, says Trump

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, said yesterday that London’s new Mayor, Sadiq Khan, made “very rude statements” about him – and Trump warned that he will not have a good relationship with British Prime Minister, David Cameron, if he’s elected. Trump made the comments in an interview with ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” host Piers Morgan, when asked to respond to criticisms made about him by British politicians. Trump’s comments on Islam have provoked an outcry in the United Kingdom (UK), and prompted parliamentarians to debate a proposal to ban him from the country for hate speech after a petition to do so attracted more than 500,000 signatures. In December, Cameron labeled the presidential hopeful’s suggestion of a temporary ban on Muslims traveling to the United States (U.S.) as “divisive, stupid and wrong.” Asked about Cameron’s remarks, Trump said he di...

Scientists correct wrinkles with ‘second skin’

A new lab-created “second skin” could help correct wrinkles… researchers demonstrated that the silicone-based polymer could be applied as a thin coating that matches the elastic and mechanical properties of young, healthy skin. When tested on humans, the material helped reshape under-eye bags and enhanced skin hydration. Depleted elasticity of the skin and overexposure to harmful ultraviolet rays causes wrinkles, but scientists say a new lab-created “second skin” could help correct this damage. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT), Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Olivo Labs, United States (U.S.) and Jennifer Aniston’s beauty company Living Proof reported in a recently released research paper that the material has the potential to tighten, smooth and protect skin from harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays. With more development, their invention also could act as a delivery mechanism for medication, and hel...

Headwinds against Saudi Arabia’s $2tr mega fund

Prince Mohammed bin Salman Saudi Arabia’s plan to create the world’s biggest sovereign wealth fund- a $2 trillion behemoth that can throw its weight around global markets may be slowed down by its responsibility for aiding the economy at home. Building the Public Investment Fund (PIF) into “the largest fund in the world by far” is a cornerstone of radical economic reforms announced by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last month to cut the kingdom’s reliance on oil. The PIF, founded in 1971 to finance development projects in Saudi Arabia and until now little known abroad, is to grow from 600 billion riyals ($160 billion) to over seven trillion riyals, helping make Riyadh a global “investment power”, he said. The biggest sovereign fund so far is Norway’s, worth $852 billion. “There will be no investment, movement or development in any region of the world without the vote of the Saudi sovereign fund,...

Passengers stranded as aviation fuel scarcity grounds flights

Hall of the domestic terminal, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos Lingering scarcity of aviation fuel, known as JetA1, yesterday took a harsh turn, leaving the industry reeling and almost all outbound flights in Lagos cancelled and thousands of passengers stranded. Hordes of passengers that had thronged the local wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA2) and General Aviation Terminal (GAT), as early as 6am, had their hopes dashed. Perhaps due to antics of the operators or sheer hope that the scarce product would arrive to enable the planes fly, most of the scheduled flights were severally postponed till they were all cancelled in the evening. Except for Arik Air and the likes of First Nation, Medview and Dana Air that offered skeletal services in the afternoon, all other airlines cancelled their flights, much to the pain of customers. An Uyo-bound passenger, Abigail, was among those Nigerians that had their day ruined due to the development. Abigail told The Guar...
